Free eye test in Vecindario
At Ópticas del Sur, on Avenida de Canarias in Vecindario (Gran Canaria), we test your eyes free of charge and without an appointment, using clinical equipment. Eye tests are for adults and for children from the age of 6. We speak Spanish and English.

What the eye test includes
It is a complete check of your vision. Depending on what you need, it includes:
- Visual acuity: how well you see at a distance and close up.
- Eye pressure measurement (tonometry).
- Tests for short-sightedness (myopia), long-sightedness (hyperopia), astigmatism and presbyopia.
- Contact lens assessment, fitting and follow-up, if you wear contact lenses or would like to start.
Afterwards we explain your prescription and your options: prescription glasses, varifocals or contact lenses.
How often should you have your eyes tested?
We recommend an eye test once a year, even if you can see well. Eyesight changes over time, often so gradually that you don't notice. A yearly check is the best way to spot any change early.
Come in sooner if you notice any of these signs:
- Blurred vision at a distance or close up.
- Difficulty reading your phone or small print.
- Squinting to focus.
- Tired eyes or headaches after reading or using screens.
- Finding it harder than before to drive at night.
Eye tests for children from age 6
We test children's eyes from the age of 6. Many children don't say they can't see well because they think everyone sees the way they do, so an eye test helps to catch short-sightedness, long-sightedness or astigmatism early.
If your child needs glasses or contact lenses and is 16 or under, they may be entitled to Plan VEO, a grant of up to €100 from the Spanish Ministry of Health.
How it works
- Walk in. Come to the shop during our opening hours: Monday to Friday, 9:00–13:00 and 16:30–20:00, and Saturdays, 10:30–13:00.
- We check your vision. In our optometry room, with clinical equipment. If you already wear glasses or contact lenses, bring them with you.
- We explain the results. We tell you your prescription in plain language and which solution suits you.
An eye test at the optician's measures your prescription and helps detect vision problems, but it does not replace a visit to an ophthalmologist. If you have eye pain, sudden loss of vision or see flashes of light, see a doctor.
